About Jakob Schiller

Jakob Schiller is a freelance photographer based in Albuquerque, NM. He grew up in the tiny village of El Valle, N.M., which is nestled in a river valley 8,000 feet high in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. He is currently working on his PhD in American Studies at the University of New Mexico and is available for freelance assignments worldwide.

Jakob has a masters degree in journalism from UC Berkeley and interned at the Albuquerque Tribune, the Evansville Courier & Press, The Santa Fe New Mexican, and The Naples Daily News before taking a staff job at the Redding Record Searchlight where he worked until 2009. He is also a trained reporter and speaks Spanish fluently.

His writing and photography have appeared in publications including the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, Mother Jones, and PBS's FRONTLINE/World. He was awarded UC Berkeley's Dorothea Lange Fellowship for Documentary Photography in 2006 and the Susan Meiselas Award for Photojournalism in 2005 and 2006. His work has also been recognized by the National Press Photographers Association, the Scripps Journalism Awards, and the California Newspaper Publishers Association.
